At the age of 88, Kris Kristofferson, who penned iconic songs about lovers, loners, boozers, and a hapless couple hitchhiking—and who subsequently rose to fame by starring in numerous motion pictures, passed away.

The singer, composer, and actor passed away quietly on Saturday, September 28, at home in Maui, Hawaii, surrounded by his loved ones, according to his spokesman. The cause of death was kept private.

Beginning in the late 1960s, Kristofferson gained recognition as a songwriter in Nashville with hits including "Me and Bobby McGee," "Sunday Morning Coming Down," and "Help Me Make It Through the Night," which were later popularized by vocalists like Janis Joplin, Johnny Cash, and Sammi Smith
